English in Oakland Before 1870

"GEORGE THOMAS ANDREWS, who was a member of one of the first immigrant trains to cross the plains, died January l2th at Oakland, where he had continuously resided since 1849, aged 88 years, and survived by a widow and four children. He was a native of ENGLAND." (Grizzly Bear Magazine, Feb., 1912, page 14)

JAS. BAILEY,. East Oakland, dealer in ornamental and fruit trees (James Daily and Co.) came from ENGLAND to California in 1852 and to Alameda County in 1856. His post office address was Oakland. (Thompson & West, page 169)

B. BANGLE, house painter, living in Brooklyn, came from ENGLAND to Alameda County in 1862. His postoffice address was Brooklyn. (Thompson & West, page 169)

"SAMUEL BARTLETT, an old pioneer of Ventura County, passed away in Ventura, September 7th. He was a native of ENGLAND, aged 90 years, and had had an eventful career. For many years he followed the sea, and at one time was a member of the English navy. In early days he came to California and settled in Oakland, but returned East on various occasions. Deceased had been a resident of Ventura since 1881. A widow and two sons survive." (Grizzly Bear Magazine, Oct., 19ll, page 10)

EDWARD BANGLE, was born in ENGLAND in Cambridgeshire, January 20, 1829. In 1854 he came to San Francisco and shortly afterward located in Oakland. Ha was a painter by trade, with stores in San Francisco and Oakland. He painted stage coaches for the Wells-Fargo and Co. Express. In 1885 he built his family residence, at 1402 Sixth Avenue, Oakland. (Guinn. Vol. 11, page 567)

WILLIAM BOLTON, physician and member of the Board of Health, came to .California from ENGLAND in 1868, moving to Oakland in 1869. His post office address was West Oakland. (Thompson & West, page 167)

JNO. BOWMAN, in 1869 was n carpenter, living at the northwest corner of West Fifteenth Street and Kirkham, Oakland Point. He was a native of ENGLAND, but made California his home until his death on March 12, 1885. (Stilwell's Directory) & (M.V.C.)

SAMUEL BROCKHURST, JR. born in ENGLAND, passed away June 27, 1879. ID 1869 he was living on Fifteenth Street between Market and West Streets, Oakland. (Stillwell's Directory)

SAMUEL BROCKHURST, SR., born in ENGLAND, lived on Fifteenth Street between Market and West Streets. He died in 1880 at the age of 74. (M.V.C.) (Stilwell's Directory) .

WILLIAM BROWN, a native of ENGLAND, was a farmer here in the early days. In 1869 he had his residence on the south side of Harrison Street between Fremont and Clay. His death, at the age of 73, occurred in 1876. (Stillwell's Directory) (M.V.C. )

JAMES COBBLEDICK, a dealer in carriage and wagon materials came to California from ENGLAND in 1854 and to Brooklyn (West Oakland) in 1862. (Thompson & West Atlas, page 169)

SAMUEL G. COLLINS, born in ENGLAND, was living in Oakland in 1869 on the west side of Walker Street between Washington and Jackson. He was employed by the Clinton Flouring Mills. His death was recorded in 1877. (Stillwell's Directory) (M.V. C. )

EMILY H. F. CORNEY, came to California from her birthplace in ENGLAND and was buried in Oakland in June, 1870. (M.V.C.)

WILLIAM COUSINS, who came to California in 1819 and erected many of San Francisco's first brick buildings, died recently in Oakland. He was a native of ENGLAND, aged 92 years, and is survived by a daughter. He was a member of the Society of California Pioneers." (Grizzly Bear Magazine, June 1912, page 16)

HANNAH CURTIS, born in ENGLAND in 1798, was buried in Oakland in October, 1870. (M.V. C. )

JAMES DEBOICE, a native of ENGLAND, had a wine and liquor business in Oakland in early days. He was located on Broadway between Water and First Streets in 1869. (Stillwell's Directory) (M.V.C.)

GEORGE DIXON, of ENGLISH birth, died here in 1866 and was buried on April 8 in Mountain View Cemetery. (M.V.C. )

J. H. ELLIS, painter by trade, left ENGLAND, in 1863 for California, arriving in Brooklyn (East Oakland) in 1865. (Thompson & West, page 169)

"THOMAS R. EVANS, native of ENGLAND, 84, came in 1666; died at Oakland, Alameda County." (Grizzly Bear Magazine, page 15, Feb. 1935)

"MRS. MARY A. FRAZIER, a native of ENGLAND, 84, came across the plains in 1851 and resided since in the San Francisco Bay area, died at Oakland, Alameda County, survival by four children." (Grizzly Bear Magazine, Jan. 1932, Page 8)

GEORGE GIBBIN, arrived in Brooklyn (East Oakland) from ENGLAND in 1856. He became the proprietor of a saloon. (Thompson & West, page 169)

JOHN C. GOULDIN, of Lloyd & Gouldin, commercial agents, came to this country from Manchester, ENGLAND via Mexico July 15, l847, and to Brooklyn (East Oakland) in l857. He was member #2582 of the Society of California Pioneers. (Thompson & West) (Register of Society of California Pioneers--San Francisco)

JOHN C. GUNN, master mariner, born in ENGLAND in 1814, had his residence on San Pablo Road in 1869. He passed away in December of l878.(Stilwell's Directory) (M.V.C.)

"JOHN JOSEPH HAVISIDE, a native of ENGLAND, 85; came in 1863; died at Oak- land, Alameda County, survived by a wife and seven children." (Grizzly Bear Magazine, Feb. 1930, page 26)

WILLIAM HAWLETT, born in ENGLAND in l823, was living on Broadway between Second and Third Streets in Oakland in 1869. His death occurred in December, 1888. (Stilwell's Directory) (M.V.C. )

HENRY HUDSON, of ENGLISH birth, was a clerk in San Francisco in 1869 but lived in Oakland at the northwest corner of Castro and Eleventh Streets. He passed away in January, 1885. (Stilwell's Directory) (M.V.C. )

JOSEPH HUNT, migrated from ENGLAND to Brooklyn (East Oakland) in 1857, where he entered the construction business, becoming a building contractor. (Thompson & West, p. 169)

THOMAS JOSEPH HYDE, born in ENGLAND, and in the '60s was principal in the Oakland Grammar School at the southwest corner of Harrison and Sixth Streets. His death is recorded in May 1881. (Stilwell's Directory) (M.V.C. )

ARTHUR W. JEE was born in ENGLAND in 1817. He cane to California via Mexico arriving on April 28, 1849. He signed the rolls of the Society of California Pioneers on April 3, 1867, listing his residence as Oakland and his occupation as merchant. He was member #1702.(Register Society of California Pioneers, S.F. )

WILLIAM H. JOHNSON, of ENGLISH birth, helped to develop the agriculture of the Oakland area in early days. In the 1869 Directory of Oakland he was listed as a farmer in Oakland Township. He passed away in 1888. (Stilwell's Directory) (M.V.C. )

RICHARD LAMB, a carpenter living on Prospect Avenue in Oakland in early days was born in ENGLAND in 1819 and died in 1878. (Stilwell's Directory) (M.V.C.)

NATHANIEL MASON, born in ENGLAND in 1830, passed away in Oakland April 8, 1866. (M.V.C. )

MOSES G. MORSE, migrated from his native ENGLAND to this country. In 1869 he was employed by Cornelius Ironmonger, at the southeast corner of Broadway and Seventh Streets.(Stilwell's Directory) (M.V.C.)

ANDREW NEWLAND was born in ENGLAND in the early part of the 19th century. After his father's death he reared his younger brother, Edward. The two migrated to the U.S. in 1833, reaching California in 1849. They became builders in San Francisco. In 1852 they built and operated a livery stable in San Francisco, but soon realized the need of a branch of their business across the bay. They rented a building from Carpentier and Adams and the younger brother Edward was placed in charge. Andrew lived on the north side or Seventh Street between Broadway & Washington Street. EDWARD NEWLAND, born in Kirkdale, ENGLAND, May 12, 1827, had learned the business of building as a young man and immediately obtained employment when he came to San Francisco in 1849, building houses at $16.00 per day. After he and his brother Andrew opened their livery stable in Oakland they would receive as high as $100 for driving a single passenger to Stockton. Later the Newlands owned a quartz mill in Mexico, then another livery business in Oakland on Seventh Street, and also the Cabinet Carriage Company in Oakland. Later they acquired a farm for breeding fine horses. (Guinn, vol. II, p. 740)

CHARLES NEWTON of Brooklyn (East Oakland) came from ENGLAND to California in 1853. In 1863 he settled in Oakland. (Thompson & West, p. 169)

JAMES PEARCE, born in ENGLAND in 1800, died in Oakland, September 12, 1868, and was buried in Mountain View Cemetery. (M. V. C. )

SAMUEL PERRIN, ENGLISH-born settler, had his dwelling in 1869 at the southwest corner of Seconlld and Harrison Streets. He remained in Oakland until his death in 1884. (Stilwell's Directory) (M.V.C. )

ELIZABETH PORT, migrated from her native ENGLAND to this country. She died here in 1870 end was buried in Mountain View Cemetery. (M.V.C. ) (Stilwell's Directory)

WILLIAM RICHARD, born in ENGLAND in 1801, was one of Oakland's pioneer painters, living on the west side of Madison between Market and West Streets. He died in January, 1879. (Stilwell's Directory) (M.V.C.)

CAPT. J. C. ROFF, proprieterof the early Roff's Hotel, came to California from ENGLAND in 1850 and to Oakland in 1865. (Thompson & West, p. 167)

JOHN R. ROGERS, an ENGLISHMAN, born in 1813, was in the real estate business in Oakland in the '60s, residing at the southwest corner of Eleventh and Washington Streets. (Stilwell's Directory) (M.V.C. )

"CHAS. P. SHEFFIELD, born in ENGLAND, Dec. 17, 1819. Married Mary Ann Brown in 1847 at Albany, N. Y. In 1850 he arrived by steamer in California. He was a sawmaker by occupation. Various places of residence in California were San Francisco; Sierra County; Yuba County; Lassen County and Oakland. He died in San Francisco, Dec. 14, 1889." WILLIAM SHEPHERD left ENGLAND in 1869 to become a resident of Brooklyn (East Oakland) where he was listed in 1874 as a farmer. (Thompson & West, p. 169)

WALTER SLATE, of ENGLISH birth. In the '60s he was a manufacturer and dealer in furs, hides etc. on the west side of Broadway between Tenth and Eleventh Streets. He passed away in 1876. {Stilwell's Directory) (M.V.C. )

"THOMAS SMITH, a pioneer of 1849, died recently in Oakland. He was a native of ENGLAND. aged 85 years, and was early engaged in the lumber business. Three children survive." (Grizzly Bear Magazine, March 1912, p. 23)

WALTER SMITH, born in ENGLAND, was co-partner with one Mr. Starr in a cigar and tobacco business on Broadway between Eighth and Washington Streets during the '60s. He died in December 1874. [Stilwell's Directory) (M.V. C. )

"WILLIAM SPENCE, a native of ENGLAND, aged 72 years, who crossed the plains with his parents in l849, died recently at Oakland, survived by five children." (Grizzly Bear Magazine, January 1912, p. 26)

EDWIN SUTHERLAND, born at Bath, Somersetshire, ENGLAND, June 30, 1841. Arrived in California on June 18, 1852, on the Clipper Ship Governor Morton from New York City. Married Anna Maria Green, July 16, l860, in San Francisco. Served with the Vigilantes in San Francisco in 1856, as 4th Corporal in the 9th Division. Lived in San Francisco and Sonoma County and in Alameda County at Thirty-fourth and Peralta Street, Oakland. (California Pioneer Files, California State Library, Sacramento)

WILLIAM D. THOMAS was born March 31, 1829 at Swansea, WALES. He came to America in 1848 and in 1854 to California where he was engaged by James Fair as an engineer in the northern mines. He first located with his family in Oakland in 1858. He operated a stamp mill in northern California until1862 and then returned to the bay region where he operated a mist mill. Later he was in the insurance ad real estate business, erecting and selling many residences. His own home was for many years on East Twelfth Street, Oakland. His death occurred in 1907. (Guinn, .vol. ROBERT TURNBULL, who came here from ENGLAND in 1862, was a florist and nursery man in Brooklyn Township (East Oakland). (Thompson & West, p. 169)

WILLIAM TYE, born in ENGLAND in 1827, migrated to California where he worked as a carpenter. During the '60s he lived in Oakland on the east side of Linden near Fifth Street. (Stilwell's Directory) (M.V.C. )

JOHN MUGG WEBB, was born at Romsey, Hampshire, ENGLAND, November 5, 1806. Married Margaret Keatly, November 5, 1840, in New York City. In 1849 they came to California, via the Isthmus of Panama and lived in San Francisco and Oakland. He was a book-keeper and farmer. Died at Livermore November ll, 1884. JOHN PAYSEN WALKER, native of ENGLAND, 1804, came to California in 1850, to Brooklyn (East Oakland) in 1853; died at Elmhurst (Oakland) in 1910. (Thompson & West, p. 169) (Grizzly Bear Magazine, December 1910, p. 22)

HENRY WEEKS, came from ENGLAND to Brooklyn (East Oakland) in 1868. He was a blacksmith and carriage-maker. (Thompson & West, p. 169)

SAMUEL WESTALL, born in ENGLAND in 1804, lived in Oakland at the corner of Sixteenth and West Streets in 1869. He ms a house-painter in San Francisco. His death is recorded in July 1872. (Stilwell's Directory) (M. V.C.)

"MRS. FANNY WINTER, a native of ENGLAND; 97; came via the Isthmus of Panama in 1859; died at Oakland, Alameda County, survived by six daughters." (Grizzly Bear Magazine, June 1930, p. 44)

JOHE YULE was born in Yorkshire, ENGLAND, November 30, 1845. In 1862 he came to California and engaged in mining. In 1867 he came to Alameda County where he taught school for five years. Then he became Deputy County clerk and studied law. In 1877 he became Justice of the Peace of Oakland Township; in 1880, Police Judge of the City of Oakland and in 1882, City Attorney. (Wood, p. 999)
