Oakland in the 1860's

- 1860: Federal census puts Oakland's population at 1,543
- 10 June 1861: Oakland Home Guard established in response to outbreak of Civil War
- 1861: First dam at 12th street established on "Merritt's Lake" (now Lake Merritt)
- August 1862: Work begins on wharf at Gibbons Point, eventually the Oakland Pier
- 02 September 1863: San Francisco & Oakland Railroad trains begin service between the wharf and Broadway
- 1867: Broadway is lined with gas lamps by the Oakland Gas Company, founded in 1866
- 24 April 1864: Oakland city council votes to pave Broadway from the wharf to Fourteenth street
- 19 March 1868: First "proper" city hall built in Oakland on Fourteenth and Washington
- July 1868: Smallpox scare tears through Oakland
- 1869: B. F. Stillwell publishes the first Oakland city directory. Oakland High School opens.
- 08 November 1869: First transcontinental railroad arrives in Oakland
