Oakland in the 1880's
- 10 March 1880: Large fire destroys the Grand Central Hotel at 12th and Webster streets
- 08 September 1880: Large fire destroys the Galindo Hotel, on 8th Street
- 1884: Oakland painters go on strike. Their demands: 9-hour days, 6-day weeks, and $3.50 a day in wages
- 1889: St. Mary's College relocates to Oakland from San Francisco
