- 14 August 1893: The Tubbs Hotel, an Oakland institution since 1879, burns to the ground
- May 1898: Oakland men enlist after U. S. declares war on Spain
- 19 July 1898: Chinese fugitive ignites 5,000 pounds of gunpowder killing 6 and causing mass destruction
